"In Chinese mythology, a Nian (simplified Chinese: 年兽; traditional Chinese: 年獸; pinyin: nián shòu) is a beast that lives under the sea or in the mountains. Once each spring, on or around Chinese New Year, it comes out of hiding to attack people, especially children. The Nian is sensitive to loud noises and is afraid of the color red. The Chinese Lion Dance is known to have originated from the legend of the Nian. The tradition began when a Nian attacked a village. After the attack, the villagers discussed how to make the Nian leave them alone. Eventually they came up with a plan where drums, plates and empty bowls were hit and firecrackers were thrown, causing loud banging sounds that would scare off the Nian. This scared the Nian, and since that time, the Nian has not appeared in the village again. The Nian is still believed to exist, but that it is scattered about the jungle and mountains, never to appear in front of a human again."

chinese new year 2011 rabbit property:

The rabbit is full of positive connotations all around the world.  In China, people born in the year of the rabbit are articulate, talented and ambitious. In Western countries, the rabbit is associated to the softness of our childhood, to the wildness of the hunt, to the joyfulness of a great feast, to the happiness of family Easter gatherings and to sensuality.
Each year is also designated by one of the 12 Animals For instance, 2005 is Year of Rooster; 2006 is Year of Dog; and 2007 is the Year of Pig.
2008 is the Year of the Rat

This system is extremely practical. A child does not have to learn a new answer to the question, "How old are you?" in each new year. Old people often lose track of their age, because they are rarely asked about their present age. Every one just have to remember that he or she was born in the "Year of the Dog" or whatever.
Since 2008 is the Year of the Rat, any one who was born in the Year of the Rat is either 1 or 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73, 85 or 97 years old.
When 2009 comes, the person is still born in the Year of the Rat. but he/she is 2,14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74, 86 or 98 yeas old.
Thus, instead of asking the question "How old are you?", ask the person "In which (animal) year were you born

chinese zodiac animals and Chinese culture

Chinese culture is a kind of yin and yang culture! In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin yang is used to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world, and how they give rise to each other in turn. The concept lies at the origins of many branches of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as being a primary guideline of traditional Chinese medicine, and a central principle of different forms of Chinese martial arts and exercise, such as baguazhang, taijiquan (tai chi), and qigong (Chi Kung) and of I Ching divination. Many natural dualities — e.g. dark and light, female and male, low and high, cold and hot — are thought of as manifestations of yin and yang (respectively).Yin yang are complementary opposites within a greater whole. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, although yin or yang elements may manifest more strongly in different objects or at different times. Yin yang constantly interacts, never existing in absolute stasis.
The concept of yin and yang is often symbolized by various forms of the Taijitu symbol, for which it is probably best known in western cultures. There is a perception (especially in the West) that yin and yang correspond to good and evil. However, Taoist philosophy generally discounts good/bad distinctions as superficial labels, preferring to focus on the idea of balance. The idea that yin and yang has a moral dimension originated in the Confucian school (most notably Dong Zhongshu) around the second century BCNow,
According to chinese yin and yang culture, we divide 12 chinese zodiac animals into 6 groups, and each group and yin and yang!

song lyric of  Up on the House Top

Up on the housetop
reindeer pause,
Out jumps good old Santa Claus.
Down thru' the chimney
with lots of toys,
All for the little ones,
Christmas joys.
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Up on the housetop,
click, click, click,
Down thru' the chimney
with good Saint Nick.
Up on the house top
First comes the stocking
of little Nell,
Oh, dear Santa
fill it well;
Give her a dolly
that laughs and cries
One that will open
and shut her eyes.
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Up on the housetop,
click, click, click,
Down thru' the chimney
with good Saint Nick.

Up on the house top02
Next comes the stocking
of little Will,
Oh just see
what a glorious fill
Here is a hammer
and lots of tacks,
Also a ball
and a whip that cracks.
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Ho, ho, ho!
Who wouldn't go!
Up on the housetop,
click, click, click,
Down thru' the chimney
with good Saint Nick.

History of Up on the House Top
According to William Studwell in The Christmas Carol Reader Up on the House Top was the second-oldest Christmas song of a secular nature, outdone only by Jingle Bells, which was written in 1857. It’s also considered the first Yuletide song to focus primarily on Santa Claus. In fact, according to Readers Digest Merry Christmas Song Book Hanby was the first to offer up the idea that Santa and his sleigh land on the roof of homes. [2] Benjamin Russell Hanby was born in 1833 near Rushville, Ohio, the son of a minister involved with the Underground Railroad. During his short life he wrote some 80 songs before dying of turburculosis in 1867. Other than "Up on the House Top" his best well-known song is Darling
In 1992, a syndicated television special of the same name, produced by Perennial Pictures Film Corporation in Indianapolis, Indiana was released. Co-writer/co-producer/co-director G. Brian Reynolds also was the voice of Curtis Calhoun, and also composed the musical score. Amelie" has become something of a cultural phenomenon in its native France, where it went on to break box-office records before picking up a Cesar for best picture. It also goes up for five Oscars this month. Awards usually don’t mean much except as a pat on the back; in this case, however, "Amelie" deserves all the recognition it gets. A charming Audrey Tautou plays the title character. Amelie leads a sheltered life. The young woman works at a cafe and seems content to let life pass her by.

Then one day she finds a box hidden in her bathroom. Inside are useless mementos of a childhood, meaningless to all but their owner. Amelie decides to find the owner, return the box to him and hopefully make his life a bit more pleasant. When she eventually finds the man and returns his possessions to him, he and she experience an epiphany. Thus encouraged, our heroine sets out to change the lives of those around her. Her schemes vary from the trivial to the profound.
She sets up a coworker with a date. She inspires the artist next door. She helps her father learn to live again. But through it all, Amelie herself doesn’t have the courage to fall in love with Nino (Mathieu Kassovitz), the man who could be her soul mate. Like Jane Austen’s Emma, Amelie can fix everyone’s life but her own. "Amelie" is a heartfelt plea for people to be nice to each other. What makes its characters genuine is their yearning to become something better than what they are .

st. basil’s cathedral history

St. Basil’s Cathedral is Moscow’s most famous and arguably the most beautiful ecclesiastical building.
● St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 1550′s by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate his victory over the Tartars in Kazan in Central Asia.
● Originally, it was white sided with gilded domes. The colorful patterns on the domes were not added until about a century after the cathedral was erected.
● It houses nine distinct chapels. Each has its own uniquely shaped, hued and patterned dome. Today, St. Basil’s Cathedral is a museum, no longer a place of worship.
● Legend has it that on completion of the church the Tzar ordered the architect, Postnik Yakovlev, to be blinded to prevent him from ever creating anything to rival its beauty again.
● Regrettably, the interior of St. Basil’s Cathedral badly deteriorated. Some say the decline began in 1812 when Napoleon’s cavalry lodged their horses within the cathedral. Others say it was the result of 20th century neglect. Fortunately, a project is currently afoot to restore St Basil’s interior.

Foundations, traditionally to medieval Moscow, were built of white stone, while the churches themselves were built of red brick (28×14×8 centimeters), then a relatively new material (the first attested brick building in Moscow, the new Kremlin Wall, was launched in 1485). Surveys of the structure showed that the basement level is perfectly aligned, indicating use of professional drawing and measurement, but each subsequent level becomes less and less regular. Restorators who replaced parts of the brickwork in 1954–1955 discovered that the massive brick walls conceal an internal wooden frame running the whole height of the church. This frame, made of elaborately tied thin studs, was erected as a life-size spatial model of the future cathedral and was gradually enclosed in solid masonry

The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. Several walls have been built since the 5th century BC that are referred to collectively as the Great Wall, which has been rebuilt and maintained from the 5th century BC through the 16th century. One of the most famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains; the majority of the existing wall was built during the Ming Dynasty.
The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Nur in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. The most comprehensive archaeological survey, using advanced technologies, has recently concluded that the entire Great Wall, with all of its branches, stretches for 8,851.8 km (5,500.3 mi). This is made up of 6,259.6 km (3,889.5 mi) sections of actual wall, 359.7 km (223.5 mi) of trenches and 2,232.5 km (1,387.2 mi) of natural defensive barriers such as hills and rivers.
